Using Reiki to Support Cancer Patients

Using Reiki to Support Cancer Patients
Cancer is such a powerful and frightening illness – its effects are both physical and emotional, affecting not only the patient, but their family and friends also. Reiki, as we know, has such an impact on a person`s sense of well-being,
.
I have seen the devastating physical and emotional effects of cancer, but I have also seen the power of hope, determination, positive thinking and the strength of the Human Spirit.
Patients with cancer at various stages of the illness, from the earliest diagnosis, to the terminal stage can all benefit from the centering effect of Reiki.
.
Patients with Cancer: building a supportive relationship with Reiki
It is particularly helpful to discuss with the cancer patient their feelings about lose of control over their lives. Being passive goes against our usual Survival instinct.  This can lead to an extra element of depression :negative feelings of helplessness and hopelessness and a weakening of the belief and resolve to survive. Cancer patients being taught to use Reiki helps address this problem.
.
A negative state of mind inhibits and suppresses the body’s own healing responses. All Doctors would agree that treatment of cancer is enhanced by the attitude of the patient. The use of Reiki helps a patient`s sense of self muster inner resources.

.

.Aspects of the patient`s emotional and physical life should be discussed with the patient. Patients with a focus on how they can have input into their cancer treatment gives an element of vitality  to the prognosis that only the patient can provide.

.
Using Reiki for Cancer Patients
Naturally a cancer patient could be given a Reiki Treatment. I would also always offer the opportunity to give them a Reiki Attunement and teach them how to self treat. This is wonderfully empowering for the cancer patient.

Reiki Supports Nurses in a Deeper Awareness
Reiki training enhances this ability to “know” or “sense” things or be more aware of subtle signs. It helps one to become more aware of the emotional or spiritual component of dis-ease that the nurse can share with the client to gain understanding or insight.

This insight fits with the nurses’ role of helping a person to understand and learn more about their health or illness and to provide guidance to change behaviour and increase awareness As nurses’ roles continue to change and expand, Reiki is there to assist in their professional development. Reiki assists nurses in caring for themselves and restores their energies so they can continue to give of themselves in their role as health care advocates.

Nurses who practice Reiki are in the unique position to combine both Reiki and their strong  medical knowledge to  help clients and improve the health care system.

.

Always a Way
Emergency room nurses use Reiki to calm patients down quickly and to be more open to treatment. They find that Reiki also calms down family members.

Dr. Nancy Eos explains in her book “Reiki and Medicine” how she uses Reiki to help her decide which person needs to be seen first (triage).

Home care nurses use Reiki in physical and psychological assessments, changing dressings, paper work, health care teaching and working with family members.

Recovery room nurses report using Reiki over the incision site of painful areas and find patients have an easier time waking up or recovering from anaesthesia and surgical trauma.

Nurses in private practice tell me how Reiki enhances their hypnotherapy skills, guided imagery exercises, their work in Labour and Delivery, and massage sessions, etc

Others give their patients Reiki while taking their blood pressure or pulse. The patient’s often reply that they feel “something special” or feel more relaxed.

It is amazing what just a few minutes of Reiki can do.

Introduction to Reiki Meditation

Once you review this introduction to Reiki meditation techniques, you will be able to decide if this type of activity is appropriate for you. There are a large number of meditation techniques that you may select from. It is important that you know and understand that choosing the technique that is right for you is absolutely essential. It may take a while to decide on a technique that you can be comfortable with. The good news is that most people enjoy the techniques that are involved when it comes to Reiki meditation. Here, you will learn more about this fascinating strategy and way of life.

Introduction to Reiki Meditation
Reiki meditation is a form of meditation that was originally used in Japan. It was used in hopes of healing. It has been believed that when an individual experiences this type of meditation, they encounter an optimization in the area of homeostasis. This is the “balance” of the body. It is believed that if one person receives energy from another person, the body will be able to effectively heal itself and optimize the health on the whole. The Reiki meditation techniques use many other types of symbols and practices. It is almost a collaboration of many different healing techniques used around the world. It is found to improve the mind, and also to increase the health of the one who practices. “Rei” means “universal spirit”, and “ki” means “life energy”. Basically, Reiki is the ability to tap into the “universal energy of life” that we all possess.

Introduction to Reiki Health Benefits
As with any type of meditation, there are many health benefits associated with Reiki. Seeing that this particular technique was developed as a way to heal the body, there are many cases in which this healing has been proven due to various types of scientific, medical, and psychological case studies. The following outlines a brief introduction to Reiki meditation techniques and health benefits:

  • Individuals who engage in Reiki have been found to have a slower and more relaxed heart rate of those that do not practice this technique. This means that the blood pressure in the body is reduced, and there is not so much strain on the heart to work.
  • It is quite possible to experience an immunity boost when you perform this activity. This means that you stand a lower chance of developing sicknesses like the standard flu and cold, as well as a lower chance of developing complications such as one of the many different types of cancer.
  • Do you suffer from chronic pain? Many people do. There are all sorts of issues that can result in pain. These include arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, cancer, nerve disorders, disorders of the muscles, problems with the bones, and more. If chronic pain or any of these conditions sound familiar to you, it is important to consider practicing Reiki. Pain can be successfully reduced and/or resolved if you do engage in this meditation type.
  • Do you suffer from a sleep disorder? There are many different types of sleep disorders that can actually result in the onset of medical problems. Common sleep disturbances include chronic fatigue, insomnia, and sleep apnea. Those that suffer from these problems have often experienced relief when it comes to practicing Reiki. Now, you can too!
  • There are many individuals that may find that they suffer from complications in making decisions, learning new things, concentrating, and memory retention. While experiencing these issues is not so much fun, the good news is that Reiki practices can successfully overcome these complications.

The Reiki Meditation Experience
The Reiki experience is a very unique form of therapy that is believed to heal the body, soul, and mind of the person who is engaging in the technique. Generally, an individual who is trained in Reiki will start the session with an introduction to Reiki meditation techniques. The professional in Reiki will use the power of touch in order to transfer their energy to you. Most of the time, you will be lying down. However, in many cases, you may be allowed to sit comfortably in a chair. The professional will then place their hands above your head using various types of movements in order to create a steady stream of energy that you will benefit from. Reiki meditation is an effective means of achieving the homeostasis or natural “balance” in the body. There are benefits to the spirit, physical advantages, and numerous psychological benefits to engaging in the act of Reiki meditation. If you are looking for a type of meditation that sways away from the traditional type and goes “outside the box” – you should definitely consider the art of Reiki. You will feel better, perform better, and be healthier overall!

While this is only a basic introduction to Reiki meditation techniques, it is quite clear that this can be beneficial to your mind and body.

Healing Relationships With Reiki

Healing Relationships With Reiki

by Laura Ellen Gifford

As we progress on our journey through life, many opportunities are presented to develop relationships with other people. When we are small children, we form our relationship with ourself, our parents, siblings and other family members. When we go to school we add our friends, peers, and teachers to our lives. As young adults, romantic relationships often become the focus. If we choose to marry, or otherwise commit ourselves to another person, the romantic relationship brings us almost back to the beginning, as we now have new family members and friends to relate with.

Reiki is a very effective tool to assist in creating and nurturing successful relationships in your life. The first step is to recognize that each relationship is a living creation. It is a special blend of energies between people. Once you recognize the relationship as a life form, it becomes much easier to detach your thoughts and emotions and be able to serve as a channel of healing energy which is directed tothe relationship.

When there is an imbalance in a relationship, it is very often rooted in power issues, and/or fear. The first step in healing a relationship with Reiki is to identify the areas of weakness or imbalance. You need to focus on the action of identifying these areas. It is often helpful to select an object, that can physically represent the relationship. Items like pictures, crystals, or gifts the parties have given to each other can serve very effectively in this role.

The purpose of selecting an object is to more clearly focus the healing energy when you are working on the relationship, and to give you a point of reference to visualize when conflicts arise. For example you may wish to select a quartz cluster to represent your family relationship with your parents, or a tantric twin crystal for a life partner. By selecting the object to use in your meditations and healing work, you can bring the energy of it to you through visualization by simply thinking of the object.

Often there are weaknesses in relationships that produce symptoms which are very much on the surface, and only glimpses of the real issues. As The Course in Miracles teaches us; “I am never angry for the reason I think I am.” We attract relationships into our lives to assist with our growth. A very common way this happens is for a person who faces lessons of power and control to select a relationship with either a very controlling, or a very docile person. Learning to bring this energy into balance is vital for the relationship to survive, or to transform peacefully.

To determine the issues you need to work on to heal your relationship, select the object which represents the relationship. Find a special place to keep it, an altar, a table or shelf, where you can keep other items away from it so the energy field is not disrupted. If you want to carry your object with you keep it in a special carrying case, or perhaps a scarf. Find a quiet time and place where you will not be interrupted by the telephone, or other people. Sit or stand before the object in a comfortable position, and create a prayer of intent. Something like;

“Creator, Infinite Spirit, Mother Father God, I request the presence of the Angels and Archangels of Healing, my Reiki guides and forces, and the purest and most holy spiritual guides. I ask that these energies gather with me at this time for the purpose of healing the relationship of (name all parties involved). I ask that I be guided to determine the imbalances in the relationship, and that the lessons needed be made clear so all concerned may grow with Divine Love. Thank you for this guidance. Amen.”

Then draw all the Reiki symbols you are attuned to over the object, and invoke the sacred name of each symbol three times as you draw them. (If you are a Reiki I practitioner you can do this without the symbols) Then draw the symbols on your palms, crown, third eye, throat and heart chakras. When this process is complete ask the Reiki energy to flow fully and completely through you for the purpose of clarity and healing this relationship. Let the energy flow as long as you feel it. The first time you empower the object it is good to try to allow at least 30 minutes for this work. Subsequent work can be accomplished sometimes in 5 minutes, but try to allow at least 15.

When you feel the process is complete seal it in Divine Love and Healing. It is very important to then acknowledge the healing that has taken place by giving thanks to all the guides and forces which assisted you, and send Reiki back to them. This is to balance the energies between you and your guides, and to create a complete acknowledgment within your entire spiritual, mental, emotional and physical being that your prayer has been answered and the healing has taken place. This signals to your mental and emotional being to be aware on the conscious level when issues present themselves in the relationship, that they are being offered as opportunities to heal. As each and every issue comes up ask why it is presented to you, what is the source of your discomfort with it, and how can you perceive it in a positive light?

You will be presented with the answers in many forms, so be open and aware. God speaks to us in infinite ways.

Often problems in relationships are simply related to the perspective in which we see things. We each live in our own Perspective Reality, based on our experiences. When we can step into another’s Perspective Reality and see the situation through their eyes, based on knowledge of their experiences, it is much easier to understand one another. When we understand something, we no longer fear it, and our relationship is healed. Remember, Reiki always produces results on some level, and no prayer goes unanswered. Wishing you much peace and joy in all your relationships.

Reiki: Hype or Help?

Reiki: Hype or Help?
By Therese Droste

Neurosurgeon Clinton Miller viewed Reiki (pronounced RAY-KEY) with skepticism several years ago. But that skepticism eroded after Miller experienced the therapy himself. “I went from high personal excitation to feeling like I was floating in the ether,” says Miller.Today, Miller prescribes Reiki for his patients. And he’s not alone. Many healthcare professionals and others are beginning to incorporate Reiki in their treatment of illnesses ranging from asthma to cancer to depression. Reiki sessions are being used for pain management, to accelerate recovery from surgery and reduce medication side effects.

Chaplain Laurie Garrett often performs Reiki on dying patients. “I strive to bring a sense of peace about the dying process and to help patients become less resistant [to death],” says Garrett, a therapist at the Institute for Health and Healing, San Francisco.

What Is Reiki?
Simply put, Reiki—also called energy medicine—is an ancient hands-on healing practice which harnesses what believers call the Universal Life Force—the energy field that surrounds all beings, including humans.

The term Reiki is a combination of the Japanese words “Rei “(spiritually guided), and “Ki” (energy or force). The practice dates back more than three thousand ago to ancient Tibet. In the late 1800s, the healing method was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan and later introduced into the western world by Hawayo Takata, an American from Honolulu, Hawaii. (see “History of Reiki”)

Despite its increasing acceptance by the healthcare community, Reiki has its share of critics. Chief among them is Eric Krieg with the Philadelphia Association for Critical Thinking, whose 150 members include scientists and educators who seek to “provide a rational response to such energy field work claims.”

“Reiki practitioners can’t seem to prove that this energy field exists,” contends Krieg. “Reiki seems to be a cult, and its practitioners are way out there in la-la land.” Most diseases go into spontaneous remission, he continues. “Even if you had a witch doctor lay his hands on you, chances are you’d think it worked.”

How Does Reiki Work?
A Reiki practitioner holds his or her hands in one of 12 positions designed to bring energy into the recipient’s body. There is no massaging, kneading or any other intense motion. These positions are grouped into three portions of the body: On or near the head, on the front torso, and on the back torso. While there are standard positions, practitioners will often adapt or add new ones depending on a patient’s needs.

Practitioners receive the energy first, says Patricia Alandydy, who heads the Reiki program at Portsmouth (NH) Regional Hospital. The practitioner’s body then acts as a conduit for the energy to be drawn through and delivered to the recipient.

“The result is rejuvenating, rather than draining, for the practitioner,” says Alandydy. “I’m never drained of my own personal energy, because the Universal Life Force comes through me and into the person. If I’m working on someone who is highly emotional or anxious, I don’t absorb those feelings.”

The Health Benefits of Reiki
The recipient, meanwhile, generally feels a warm flow or tingling sensation in his or her body, but the feeling varies with each person, says Connie Hoy, executive director of The Reiki Alliance. “Sometimes people feel sleepy and relaxed, while others may nap through a session and wake up energized. Reiki brings about what the person’s body needs,” says Hoy.

Stephen Sinatra, a cardiologist and head of the New England Heart Center in Manchester. CT, recommends Reiki when he believes an energy block is hindering a patient’s ability to heal. An experienced Reiki practitioner can pick up on the part(s) of the body that may be blocked energetically and emotionally, he explains, which is “valuable feedback for the patient.”

Reiki advocates stress that the length of a Reiki treatment is not the issue; it is the touch that counts. Ann Ameling practices Reiki on herself daily, sometimes for just five minutes at a time to regroup during the day. The professor of Psychiatric Nursing at Yale University started practicing Reiki four years ago after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“There is nothing like a cancer diagnosis to make you feel out of control. Reiki helped me gain personal power,” says Ameling, who feels that Reiki allows her to slow down, relax, and think positive, healthy thoughts.

Connecting with Patients
Reiki is a way for healthcare professionals to stay connected with patients, says Alandydy. Patients “feel that someone is focused solely on them, and it allows [them] to feel cared for in a hospital setting [where] they sometimes feel lonely and disconnected from all of the commotion.”At Portsmouth Hospital, a Reiki session may last 15 minutes or longer and is often offered in a preoperative care room or at the patient’s bedside. Since starting its Reiki program two years ago, Portsmouth has conducted 2,500 Reiki sessions for free. The hospital has 20 employees trained in Reiki. An additional 2,000 sessions have been provided to patients who want to continue receiving treatments at an offsite rehabilitation clinic for a small $10 donation. The hospital also offers its Reiki treatments to caregivers.

While Reiki is not covered by insurance, a grassroots movement of 19 hospitals called The Alliance for Integrative Medicine of Northern New England is trying to change that. The group is seeking to create a baseline standard of care for various complementary therapies, including Reiki. “We want insurance providers to feel confident that we’re delivering something well organized, so that…reimbursement will follow,” reports Alandydy.

Limited Research Shows Reiki Promotes Relaxation
Given the dearth of data to prove Reiki’s benefits, it’s no wonder the therapy has vocal critics. “Many medical practitioners are troubled by the fact that no one has a clue of the mechanism. It’s energy healing, but that sometimes infuriates people with a scientifically oriented mind. Often, when such people take Reiki classes, they have trouble learning it,” says Ameling.

Although there are no large population studies to back up the benefits of Reiki, researchers are making small strides. An unpublished study of 23 people who received one Reiki touch session focused on the biochemical and physiological changes Reiki produces. The study was conducted in 1996 by Diane Wordell, Ph.D., and Joan Engebretson, Dr.P.H., associate professors at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center.

The 23 participants were hooked up to machines that measured their skin temperature, blood pressure, and muscle responses before, during, and immediately after one 30-minute Reiki session. The results showed that a person’s skin temperature increased, indicating relaxation. “When a person is stressed, the circulation goes to major organs instead of the skin. If a person’s skin is warm, that indicates relaxation,” says Wordell.

In addition, participants experienced a significant drop in blood pressure; saliva levels also rose significantly, indicating good immune functioning and anxiety levels dropped, says Wordell.

To help capture information on Reiki’s benefits, Ameling and Pamela Potter, a Ph.D. student at Yale, are setting up a pilot study that will track 20 women with breast cancer. Ten of them will use Reiki as part of their treatment. The information will be used for a larger study on Reiki’s benefits that Ameling and Potter are planning.

As for the critics, Hob Osterlund, an energy practitioner and nurse at The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu offers this advice. “Just try it and see what you feel. It’s like a restaurant—until you go there and put the food in your mouth, you don’t know if it’ll appeal to you.”

Treating Depression With Reiki

Reiki Masters believe that thought is energy vibrating at a very high frequency while the human body is energy vibrating at a lower frequency. Vibrations produce actions and actions produce reactions at grosser and grosser levels of frequency in a ripple effect!

While positive thoughts are universally acknowledged to manifest as health, negative thoughts are held to produce disease or lack of ease. Mental disease is manifested as depression, depressive psychosis, mania or even schizophrenia.

Treating depression with Reiki is fast becoming a sought-after alternative to modern drugs. Reiki deals with depression as negative energy. Negative energy manifests at the aura level as imbalance in the Chakras or energy centres and is visible to the Reiki practitioner as grey or black spots in the aura. Imbalance of the energy centres causes reactions at a physical level, for the energy centre governs the health or disease of the organs and endocrine glands located within its purview.

The Chakra System and Depression

The Chakras that are usually blocked in a person who is depressed are the lower–the root chakra, the naval chakra, and to some extent the solar plexus chakra, which is part of the middle group.

The Root Chakra anchors the person to the earth. It represents the physical will and is associated with the spinal column, bones, teeth, nails, anus, rectum, colon, prostrate gland, blood and the building of cells. The Suprarenal glands, which produce adrenalin and influence body temperature, are governed by condition of the root chakra. The person whose root chakra is out of balance cannot accept life or enjoy physical existence. The creative energy of such a person is low and self-expression is not considered necessary. The person will have a tendency to overindulge in sensual pleasures such as overeating, alcohol, sex etc. He or she becomes selfish, self-centred. Physically the person becomes overweight and suffers from constipation. When challenged the person becomes irritable, aggressive, upset, violent and displays a complete lack of trust. If the Chakra is completely blocked the person will lack physical and emotional stamina and will be filled with feelings of uncertainty.

The Naval Chakra is the creative and reproductive centre of the being. It is associated with the pelvic girdle, kidneys, bladder and all liquids such as blood, lymph, gastric juices and the regulation of the female menstrual cycle. The glands associated with this chakra are the Prostrate, gonads, ovaries and testicles. If this energy centre is active and free of blocks the person exhibits freedom in self-expression and life appears interesting. Interpersonal relationships are regarded as beautiful. A disharmonious chakra induces the person turn off sensual messages and display low self-esteem, emotional paralysis and sexual coldness. Life does not seem worth living and suicidal tendencies manifest themselves.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the power centre of the being. A harmonious Chakra gives the person a feeling that he has the power of shaping things. It is associated with the lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder and the automatic nervous system. The organ that is governed by this Chakra is the Pancreas. The body absorbs solar energy through this chakra. This nurtures the ethereal body and energizes and maintains the physical body. Emotional energy is also governed by this Chakra. Personality traits and social identities are determined by it. Since it is located between the lower and higher chakras it has the additional function of purifies the basic instincts and directing the creative energy to higher values of life. It is also connected to the astral body and helps us integrate our feelings, wishes and experiences harmoniously. A block solar plexus chakra deprives the individual of the zest for life. The person feels gloomy, unbalanced and moody. Negative vibrations impact the individual through this chakra. The person is restless and attempts to manipulate everything in accordance with his or her own wishes. There is a persistent feeling of inadequacy, which drives them to ceaseless activity. The person gets easily threatened and tends to feel dejected and discouraged. The person insists that obstacles are preventing them from realizing the true goals of life.

It is clear that the symptoms of a person in the grip of acute depression are as much physical as emotional and psychological. A block will exist in the root chakra, the naval chakra and the Solar plexus Chakra. The creative energies of the person will be at an all time low and the person will avoid situations where he or she has give expression to his or her feelings. He is self indulgent, selfish, self-centred and suffers from a large number of ailments related to the stomach and has a tendency to put on weight. He or she will lack physical stamina and will be moody, irritable, aggressive and defensive. He will have no interest in life and will refuse to socialize. In extreme cases he will attempt suicide.

Case Study of Treating Depression with Reiki:

Ms.L, an obese woman (she weighed 180 Kgs), had not stepped out of her front door for the last ten years. She was convinced that she could not walk without support and that she would fall down if she tried. She spent entire days in the house, refusing to talk with visitors. She had a compulsive need to eat and would cook and consume huge quantities of Chicken, eggs and meats at odd times of the day. She had tried anti depressant drugs and other methods of treatment that included Homeopathy, acupressure, acupuncture and anything that was recommended to her by her sister and brother in law. She was convinced that she was born unlucky and she would never be normal again. She would begin a treatment with lukewarm enthusiasm, but would soon slip into lethargy and refuse to go on with the treatment. When Ms.L was referred for Reiki, she had convinced herself that she had not long to live and had told her sister not to be surprised if she found her dead one-day. Her sister– alarmed–rushed to the Reiki clinic for help.

Day 1: Since the patient would not come to the clinic, I decided to visit her home. It was clear from Ms.L’s posture that she was in the grip of acute depression. She was seated on a sofa with her feet up on a footstool. Her body limp, her head bowed and her shoulders drooping. Her arms lay lifelessly at her sides. She seemed lost to the world and did not even look up when we entered the room. She merely lifted her eyes to look at us without enthusiasm when she was talked to. An aura scan revealed that her root chakra and the naval chakra were completely blocked and her solar plexus chakra was partially blocked.

With a lot of persuasion from her sister and myself, she got up and went to lie down on her bed. I noted that she used the walker even though she was perfectly able to walk without it. She seemed to cling to it as a means of support. I kept up a general chatter as I started the treatment. She continued looking at the ceiling blankly. After some time, she started to pay a little more attention. Her muscles would twitch and she lifted her head to see what we are doing. She called her sister near and asked her whether we were using some chemicals as she was feeling some heat where my hand rested. When she was assured that no chemicals were being used, she subsided once more into indifference. Slowly and visibly she began to relax. She soon fell into a deep sleep and began to snore. As the round of treatment was over, we let her sleep.

Day 2: Ms. L was waiting for me. She looked relaxed and calm. On enquiry, she replied, “I slept deeply and dreamlessly for the first time. I feel well”. She then went willingly and lay down on her bed. After chatting with her for some time on a variety of topics (she did not reply), I started the treatment. While doing Reiki, I continued to chat and Ms.L replied in monosyllables to the questions being addressed to her. At the end of the hour she remarked, “That felt nice”.

Day 3: Mrs. L was ready for me. She was lying down and eager to start the treatment. She began to talk about the weather all the time keeping an eye on me. When I agreed that it was hot, she began telling me how the heat was affecting her and how she could not eat as much as she used to. I made sympathetic noises to encourage her. She seemed to feel reassured and gradually opened up–almost as if she were talking to herself and occasionally asking me a question. Then, her tone changed and she became more emotional and personal. She poured out her feelings. She insisted that she was very depressed because God had taken away her husband and her children had all flown away to distant lands and nobody cared for her. She said she had hated God from the day he had taken her husband and she had not gone to church or prayed for a long time. Since she had been very religious, she felt guilty that she had forsaken God but, she hated him and she did not want to pray to him. She then began weeping and ranting at God and exclaiming that she should not be doing it! This emotional outburst lasted for almost an hour, during which I continued the treatment, unfazed. Finally, exhausted by emotions and relaxed by the Reiki, Ms.L fell asleep.

Day 4: Ms.L was waiting for me–a little shamefaced and diffident. She greeted her with a defiant “I was carried away a little yesterday. I am sorry”. I assured her that it was ok and that she must not hold back her emotions and that I do not mind her talking to me about anything. She then, asked me a little suspiciously ‘Do you think your treatment is making me unbalanced?”. Well that was a tricky question at this stage and I was not very sure whether I should admit to the fact or assure her that it was not so. I intuitively felt that it would be better to explain to Ms.L and so I told her that Reiki dives deep into the psyche and stirs up emotional blocks for release. I explained that what she was experiencing was the release of emotional blocks and it was nothing to be alarmed about. It would help her come out of her lethargy and feel more enthusiastic about life. She was silent for some time and then said that she was glad that I had been honest with her. She only requested that whatever she said to me should be kept confidential. I agreed and she said she was looking forward to the treatment. As we went through the various hand positions, she started asking me about Reiki and what it was all about. I explained to her about energy centres and how imbalances in energy caused illness. She expressed eagerness to learn it herself. I told that it could be easily arranged. She then began to talk to me about her husband and the wonderful man that he had been and how cancer had eaten into his insides unsuspected. She described the shock they had experienced when the disease was diagnosed at a terminal stage. She described the trauma of waiting for death to part them. She re-lived the pain she had felt when he went to the hospital for the last time and she could not be with him during his last minutes, as she was laid up in bed at home with a fracture. She felt she had let him down and was guilty of continuing to live when he had died such an agonizing death. She then sobbed quietly till she fell asleep exhausted by her emotions.

Day 5: Ms.L was looking very anxious when I entered her room. She immediately piped up “Do you think God is cruel?” I cautiously replied “No”. She then asked, “Do you think I should begin to pray to him? Do you think he will hear my prayers now? I have abused him so much!” I was impressed. I said, “Yes, you should. God is very forgiving and he is always happy to welcome his children, however abusive they have been!” She was content with my reply and got ready for the treatment. While I worked the hand positions she continued telling me how much she loved God and how she had missed her conversations with him. She then told me she is convinced that her husband was waiting for her in heaven and she would join him when God felt that it was time. Meanwhile she had a lot to do. She had written to her son and asked him to come back home to keep her company and was in hourly expectation of hearing from him. She then began thanking me for the wonderful treatment that I was giving her and she was convinced that God had sent me to her when she was most depressed.

Days 6-21: Followed with the patient very enthusiastic and cooperative. She gradually left off her walker and her posture improved and she stuck to mealtimes with determination. She even consented to step out of her house and take short walks in the corridor with her sister. A month later she completed a course in Reiki and even visited a textile showroom to select some dress material for her. She invited me over for a party she held to celebrate her Son’s return home. (The boy had left his job to take up one closer home to be with his mother). She was bubbling with energy and extremely enthusiastic about life. A quick scan of her chakras revealed that the energy levels were normal and the grey spots in her aura at the root and naval chakra had disappeared. The Solar plexus Chakra was also open.

Combining Reiki With Other Therapies.

Many Reiki practitioners combine crystal therapy with Reiki to stimulate the chakras. Limonite, Lapis Lazuli, Pietersite, and Turquoise are used to stimulate the sacral Chakra Wardite, Mesolite, Jasper, and Jet, help the base chakra open up. The Solar Plexus Chakra is stimulated by chrysanthemum stone, gypsum, jasper, obsidian and rutilated quartz.. Wadeite is used to stimulate all the chakras. I personally, combine Reiki treatment with Bach Flower treatment and crystal therapy as I find that it accelerates the healing and gives the patient a psychological satisfaction.

As is evident from the above case study, that Reiki brings about immediate and dramatic improvement in condition of persons suffering from depression. It is also evident from countless testimonials that persons who have come out of their depression by using Reiki have not had a recurrence of the same. Many hospitals round the world are recommending Reiki as a parallel system of treatment. Treating depression with Reiki is becoming a recognized practice within hospitals and more so with local doctors. The efficacy and impact of Reiki is best understood when it is personally experienced.
